  Sour Spring
Throughout history, the Fuente Agria (literally, sour spring) has been the most well-known of the town’s springs for its excellent mineral waters. This spring is located in the Barranco de Teror, the ravine located less than a kilometre from the historic town centre, on the road that leads from the sea coast to the summit.
For centuries, the water from this spring met the needs of generations of Teror’s citizens and was a major source of wealth for the town. Some local residents still visit the spring with their jugs and bottles to fetch water. However, many more prefer the convenience of purchasing this municipal firm’s bottled water. It has been managing the sales and distribution since 1982 and over the years, Fuente Agria’s has received important prizes for its healthful properties.
In 1928 it was declared to have Public Usefulness and considered a medicinal mineral water. In 1916, the grounds around the Fuente Agria spring were enhanced with a masonry façade as a testimony to this natural monument.

  Cistercian Monastery
In 1888 the building work was completed with the help of many local townsfolk and in November of that same year the nuns moved to their new residence.
The building is constructed bearing in mind that this order demands an absolutely cloistered and contemplative life. The decor is solemn, and the building divided into three areas: the central church, the convent itself which houses a training area and lodging.
The main part of the convent includes the farm land known as Los Castaños, purchased in 1917 where crops are grown.. The Cistercian community of Teror is well-known these days for the hand-made sweets they produce.

The Cistercian church
This church’s imposing size owes to the fact that, at the time of construction, it was thought that it would one day be parish church and sanctuary for Our Lady of the Pine as the Basilica was deteriorating.  The church has a single nave with a high barrel vault and an impressive main altarpiece dating from 1890. The main image on display is the Virgin Patrocinio, between San Benito and Ildefonso, images taken from the convent of San Ildefonso in Las Palmas.

La Plaza de Sintes is located in the grounds of the old Sintes Farm. It is the biggest open space in the area and the most recently created. This plaza has a contemporary, functional design, which fits in well with more traditional features, as in the paving stone, and with other contemporary elements. This great public space was conceived for the purpose of holding big open air events near the town auditorium, offering a cultural forum which opens the historic town centre to modern times.

La Casa Consistorial - The Council House - Das Konsistorium

  The Council House
This building is located behind the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine, to the side of the Square of the Alameda. It dates to the end of the 19th century. The lower floor was built in 1883 as a public granary. In 1909 the town hall purchased the building with the intention of installing a school. This never came to pass, however, and the building became the Council House. Between 1945 and 1952 the upper floor was added, with towers at each corner of the building. Until the end of the 1980s all the town hall   business was carried out in this building. Currently, it houses the town assembly hall. The other town hall offices are located the New Town Hall Offices building.

  Das Konsistorium
Das Konsistorium (Casa Consistorial) liegt hinter der Basilika von El Pino, an einer Seite des La Alameda-Platzes. Das Gebäude stammt vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Palacio Episcopal - Episcopal Palace - Bischofschloss

The old Episcopal Palace is located just behind the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine, the Episcopal Palace is emblematic of the historic town centre. This was a gift from the people of Teror to the Bishops Moran and Delgado in appreciation for the construction of the church of Our Lady of the Pine. Since undergoing restoration work in 1982, part of the building contains the municipal Cultural Centre with an exhibition room and main hall. The oldest section is used by the parish for religious activities.

The patio of the old Episcopal Palace is integrated with the town’s Cultural Centre and is one of the most inviting spots for respite, with its elegant wooden portico and garden area. It is open whenever an activity is held in the Cultural Centre.

La Alameda, also known as the Plaza Pío XII, is a wide expanse of public space in front of the Episcopal Palace. It dates from 1844, but its current form took shape in 1981, together with the renovation of the Episcopal Palace. Until that point, the Alameda had a kiosk which made this square a popular meeting place for outdoor socialising. Currently it is used for cultural events and festivities and is one of the most frequented spots by visitors to the historic town centre.

The House-museum of the caretakers of the Virgin (“Patronos de la Virgen”) is in the same "Plaza del Pino". Its origins date back to the end of the 17th century, though its present appearance is from the 18th century.  This museum is an example of a summer house of a well-to-do family from the xviii-xx century. In its premises are exhibited numerous objects and furniture, photographs, tapestries, porcelain, paintings and diverse pieces of great historic value.

The Calle Real de la Plaza is the main thoroughfare, which curves slightly along from the entry to the old town at the so-called Muro Nuevo to the Main Square or Plaza del Pino, with its splendid church façade. This constitutes the current town centre, which dates from the end of the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries. The houses along the way have different architectural characteristics, but all present a refined appearance. Most façades bear the stately balcony. On one side of the street, these balconies are wood with pan-tiled sloped roofing, following the traditional architectural style. Whereas on the other side of the street, they are made of stone and forged iron, which is more in keeping with the early 20th century modernism.
Number 10 is one of the oldest dwellings with a traditional barbershop, among the last on the island. This street bustles with commerce as many of the town’s oldest shops are located here.

The balconies
The balcony is a traditional feature of the typical historic town centre construction. This type of adornment graces the façades of the houses that surround the main square and adjoining streets. There are all types and styles, wooden, forged iron, with balustrades, with roofs or without, but the oldest and most striking are those with rush ceilings made with teak, which can be seen in the main square and Calle Real. At times of processions, these balconies contribute to the sense of history and occasion.
They are also a mark of prestige and social status. Such balconies adorn the houses of the most significant local gentry near the Basilica and those constructed by wealthy families at the turn of the 20th century in the old town.

La Plaza Teresa de Bolivar is one of the parts of Teror where the multi-talented Nestor Alamo and Canarian artist Santiago Santana made their mark. This small but inviting square was designed in 1958 to ease the numbers of pilgrims and visitors congregating in the nearby Plaza del Pino, especially during fiestas. It is named after the wife of Simon Bolivar, great granddaughter of Bernardo Rodriguez del Toro, another celebrated local figure born in Teror in the 17th century.
In this plaza there are two fountains, one against the wall with a pine tree statue hewn out of stone, which bears the crest of the Rodriguez del Toro family. The other fountain is a pillar with considerable artistic value built of yellow stone quarried in Teror. Its stone benches invite travellers to relax and savour their surroundings. From this spot, one is able to view the Basilica in its entirety.

La Cruz Verde - The Green Cross - Das "grüne Kreuz"

The Green CrossThe Green Cross is one of the most interesting elements of the main square, located in the leafy oleander. This iron cross, at top of a column, depicts the place where the first chapel stood in honour of Our Lady of the Pine. The cross was installed late in the 19th century, replacing a wooden cross (now found in the Basilica alcove) which, according to legend, was made with the original pine destroyed in 1684. The Virgin Mary was said to have appeared in this pine. The current location of the cross was moved a few metres from its original site in the 1970s so that it would not hinder traffic.

La Plaza del Pino is the entryway to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine, the main public square in the historic town centre, where most important municipal events are held. The origins of this square may be found in the town’s early days when the Virgin Mary appeared. This led to the construction of a hermitage. The Plaza del Pino’s current shape, however, dates to the 18th century, with the construction of the Basilica, under the direction of Antonio de la Rocha.

This irregular-shaped square lacks a specific architectural style but reflects 18th and 19th century urban development. It was in that period that the most distinguished families in the area settled around this sacred church. For centuries, the Plaza del Pino has drawn people together for street festivals and religious fiestas and also fairs and Sunday street markets.

El Camarín de la Virgen - The Alcove for the Virgin - Die Altarkapelle der Virgen

  The Alcove for the Virgin

The alcove houses the image of Our Lady of the Pine throughout the year – except in September when it is transferred to the main nave for the festivities commemorating Our Lady of the Pine. This part of the church contains the Basilica’s most important treasures including the cloaks of the Blessed Virgin, one of the oldest (1785) which is known as “Manto de los Pinos” (Cloaks of the Pines), and the jewels and objects bestowed upon the Virgin by parishioners as a sign of gratitude for miracles and petitions answered. Access to this area can be made by a rear entrance within a limited timetable.

La Virgen del Pino - Our Lady of the Pine - Die Heilige Jungfrau "Del Pino"

Our Lady of the Pine - Patron of the Canarian Diocese

It would be near impossible to conceive of Teror´s history without Our Lady of the Pine, Patron of the Canarian Diocese and religious reference point for generations of Canary Islanders. It is clear that religious  devotion to Our Lady of the Pine has spread and increased for centuries from the time of the conquest to the  present day, making Teror the religious centre for the island. The image of Our Lady of the Pine is the most  valuable item of the Basilica because of its significance as well as its antiquity. The identity of its creator is a  subject of controversy although it seems to have been brought from Seville at the end of 15th century or at  the start of the 16th.

This image has a marked influence of the Gothic period reflected in the position of the image, the style of her hair, the fold of her clothing and other aesthetic qualities. The wood used for this carving is painted in various colours and measures just over a metre in height. The vestiments and jewels displayed in the riche reflect the embroidery and goldsmith art and also illustrate the popular devotion to this Virgin. This vestiments and jewels are offering from the followers.
